Prior BACKGROUND: (CONT'D) to last year, recruitment and retention issues with these classifications and positions resulted in long term vacancies. In order to maintain patient care services and avoid the high cost of registry and overtime rates, per diem staff were hired and some worked consistently on a full-time basis. During the last fiscal year, the Department was able to fill all the vacancies. These appointments resulted in the reduction of per diem usage; therefore, this action will have little if any additional impact on the Department. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: If this action is not approved by the Board, it will negatively impact the Department's ability to staff Physical and Occupational Therapists throughout the County's medical facilities.
