APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Employment & Human Services Director, or designee, to
apply for and accept funding from California Department of Education Child Development
Division in an amount not to exceed $250,000 for health and safety improvements to be
made at selected County childcare sites during the term July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2014.
FISCAL IMPACT:
100% State funding

BACKGROUND:
The Department wishes to submit a grant application to California Department of Education
Child Development Division to fund health and safety improvements at Community
Services Bureau childcare sites.
The Bureau has identified a number of playgrounds in need of wood chip replacement,
ideally with an easier to clean product, new sandbox covers, installation of new surfacing

analysis. Approval of this board order will allow the completion of funding analysis and
grant application submission.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
If not approved, grant application will not be submitted which may result in a delay to
completing childcare facility improvements.
CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:
The Employment & Human Services Department Community Services Bureau supports
three of Contra Costa County’s community outcomes - Outcome 1: “Children Ready for and
Succeeding in School,” Outcome 3: “Families that are Economically Self-sufficient,” and,
Outcome 4: “Families that are Safe, Stable, and Nurturing.” These outcomes are achieved
by offering comprehensive services, including high quality early childhood education,
nutrition, and health services to low-income children throughout Contra Costa County.
