HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 05032011 - C.83RECOMMENDATION(S): APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Purchasing Agent to execute a purchase order with The Network Guys, Inc., on behalf of the Employment and Human Services Department, Information Technology Unit, in the amount not to exceed $119,127 for the purchase of switching gear and network maintenance to replace Cisco 4006. FISCAL IMPACT: $119,127: 100% Administrative Overhead (20% County, 40% State, 40% Federal) BACKGROUND: As of April of 2011, support on high end Cisco networking devices called Cisco 4006's will expire and the devices will need to be replaced. After careful consideration, the Department of Information Technology has determined that it would be more cost effective and simplify support to change to less complex network devices where possible. ATTESTED: May 3, 2011 David J. Twa, County Administrator and Clerk of the Board of Supervisors By: Carrie Del Bonta, Deputy cc: Earl Maciel C. 83 To:Board of Supervisors From:Joe Valentine, Employment & Human Services Director Date:May 3, 2011 Contra Costa County Subject:Authorize Purchasing Agent to Issue Purchase Order for Network Maintenance and Switching Gear BACKGROUND: (CONT'D) in our network, we would signficantly reduce our need for high-end vendor expertise to support the network. This would enable us to eliminate some portions of our maintenance contracts and migrate to a more "commodity based" support model. The cost benefit study determined the cost for keeping a few spares in inventory is far less than the cost of a support contract for devices equivalent to the 4006's. We chose a Cisco model 3750 at the 4006's replacement. This device still maintains the fault tolerance inherent in high-end network devices, such as dual power supplies. The devices in question are boxes that direct data traffic in our network. They talk to each other to communicate betwen building, and are what each PC hooks up to. Each site (of which we have about 46) have one or more network routers to move data between buildings. A typical router can support anywhere from 48 to 128 PC's and other data devices. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: The Employment and Human Services Department with an out-of-date system that will be difficult and costly to repair. CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT: None
