HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 04122011 - C.33RECOMMENDATION(S): Approve and authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee (Wendel Brunner, MD), to execute, on behalf of the County, Interagency Agreement #28–321–2 with Mt. Diablo Unified School District, to pay County an amount not to exceed $7,500 for the Family Literacy/Cares After-School Program, for the period from January 1, 2011 through June 30, 2011, which includes an amount not to exceed $500 for purchase of incentives be given to participants in Family Literacy/Cares After-School Program. FISCAL IMPACT: Approval of this agreement will result in an amount not to exceed $7,500 of funding for the Family Literacy/Cares After-School Program. No County match required. BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases account for more than two-thirds of the deaths in Contra Costa County. Obesity and its complications continue to increase in both children and adults. Diablo Unified School District BACKGROUND: (CONT'D) obesity. This Family Literacy/Cares After-School Program educates the public, particularly low-income consumers, on healthful nutrition and physical activity practices to reduce risk for chronic disease. Under Interagency Agreement #28–321–2, County will provide leadership and technical assistance to Family Literacy/Cares After-School Program within the Mt. Diablo Unified School District, through June 30, 2011 which includes an amount not to exceed $500 for purchase of incentives to be given to participants in Family Literacy/Cares After-School Program, including water bottles, pedometers, and other items that promote nutritional education and physical activities. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: If this Agreement is not approved, low-income consumers within the Mt. Diablo Unified School District will not receive needed education on healthful nutrition and physical activity practices to reduce risk for chronic disease. CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT: This program supports the following Board of Supervisors’ community outcomes: “Children Ready For and Succeeding in School” and “Families that are Safe, Stable, and Nurturing”. Expected program outcomes include an increase in physical activity and a decrease in childhood obesity.
