Subject:Approve and Authorize the Librarian, or Designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $500.00 from Philanthropic

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
in the home. Giving individuals a choice will encourage more reading to children in the home. With this grant of
$500.00, the Library will repeat these efforts to motivate children to read throughout the summer.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
If the Library does not receive the grant, the San Pablo Library will not be able to provide free books, in Spanish or
English, for children to choose from and make their own, so that the children can continue to read through the
summer months, and be better prepared to return to school in the fall.
CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:
This program supports the Children Ready for and Succeeding in School community outcome established in the
Children’s Report Card. Letting children pick a book to take home during the summer inspires them to be lifelong
readers. With this grant, the San Pablo Library will be able to provide free books, in Spanish or English, for children
to choose from and make their own. Students who continue to read through the summer months are better prepared to
return to school in the fall.
Research shows that early and positive experiences with books set the stage for a child’s success in learning to read.
Therefore, public libraries play an important role in a community. They equalize access to books, making sure all
families are able to help their child’s enjoy reading from an early age.
