In the Matter of Proclaiming )
March 25, 1990 Vernon "Lefty" )Resolution No. : 90/ 102
Gomez Day
WHEREAS Lefty Gomez was born and raised in Rodeo and
played on Garretson Fields in the early 19201s; and
WHEREAS Lefty Gomez went on to became a pitcher for the
world famous New York Yankees; and
WHEREAS the John Swett School Board recently renamed
the baseball field where he played as a young man "Lefty
Gomez Field;" and
WHEREAS Lefty Gomez was and is an inspiration for every
small town boy who ever wanted to play in the Major League;
and
WHEREAS there is to be a three-foot high marble
memorial with a laser engraved picture of Lefty at the
baseball field itself which will be permanently concreted in
the ground commemorating the fields in his memory; and
WHEREAS this memorial will be unveiled at dedication
ceremonies on March 25, 1990 at noon.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of
Supervisors of the County of Contra Costa, California,
hereby PROCLAIMS March 25, 1990, as "Lefty Gomez Day" in
Contra Costa County and EXTENDS to Mr. Gomez' widow, June
our heartfelt wish that the spirit of Lefty Gomez will touch
the lives and hearts of children everywhere.
PASSED and ADOPTED on February 13,1990, by the
unanimous vote of the Board members present.
I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and
correct copy of a resolution entered in the minutes of the
Board of Supervisors on the date aforesaid.
