Child Passenger Safety Week In
Contra Costa County
WHEREAS the Contra Costa County Health Department ' s
Prevention Program has secured three-year funding from the State
Office of Traffic Safety to reduce Contra Costa County residents '
morbidity and mortality rates associated with non-use of motor-
cycle helmets , seat belts and child car passenger safety seats;
and
WHEREAS twenty percent (20%) of all deaths in children
from birth to fourteen years are from motor vehicle fatalities;
and
WHEREAS more children under the age of five years are
killed or crippled as passengers involved in motor vehicle crashes
than the total number killed or crippled by the seven most common
childhood diseases : pertussis, tetanus, diptheria, measles,
mumps, rubella, and polio; and
WHEREAS between 1978 and 1988, about 10,000 children under
the age of five years were killed in traffic crashes, and more
than 500,000 were injured in the United States ; and
WHEREAS the correct use of child restraining seats reduces
the risk of fatality by seventy-one percent (71%) and serious
injury by sixty-seven percent (67%) .
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors
of the County of Contra Costa, California, hereby PROCLAIMS the
week of February 11-17, 1990, as "Child Passenger Safety Week, "
RECOGNIZES the activities and intent of "Child Passenger Safety
Week" for Contra Costa County residents, and URGES all parents
in Contra Costa County to transport their young children in
child car passenger safety seats and to insist that others
transporting their children do likewise.
Passed and adopted on February 6, 1990, by unanimous
vote of the Board members present.

Supervisors on the date aforesaid.
