FISCAL IMPACT: No fiscal impact from this referral. BACKGROUND: The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps, provides food assistance to more than 42 million low-income individuals and families annually. The U.S. Department of Agriculture funds SNAP. State and county agencies administer the program locally by enrolling recipients and verifying benefit levels. The Restaurant Meals program helps expand food access to those who do not have a place to store and cook food, who may not be able to prepare food or who don't have access to a grocery store. The Restaurant Meals Program currently operates in Arizona and Michigan and in a handful of California counties. Contra Costa County does not participate.
