ATTESTED: December 14, 2010 David J. Twa, County Administrator and Clerk of the Board of Supervisors By: EMY L. SHARP, Deputy cc: Human Resources, Sheriffs, Human Resources C. 40 To:Board of Supervisors From:Ted Cwiek, Human Resources Director Date:December 14, 2010 Contra Costa County Subject:P300 20872 Add one Deputy Sheriff -40 Hour (6XWA) BACKGROUND: Reductions in the Sheriff's Office budget have resulted in reduced narcotic enforcement and the necessity to withdraw participation from various local drug tasks forces. This position will be assigned to the Office of the Sheriff's Investigation Division - Special Investigation Unit and will add additional personnel to the remaining narcotics enforcement team. This position will be funded by a combination of grant funding and general funds. The U.S. Department of Justice approved a budget that included funding to reimburse a deputy sheriff in addition to reimbursement of overtime. Funding through the 2010 Community Oriented Policing Methamphetamine Initiative Grant (approved by the Board on July 13, 2010, Item C.71) will only reimburse at an entry-level deputy sheriff salary. The grant allows a new position to be added and the agency supplement the difference between an entry-level salary and the cost of the experienced deputy sheriff assigned to the position. The additional funding (20% per year) will come from the existing General Fund allocation within the Sheriff's Office budget. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: If this action is not approved, the Sheriff's Office will have to forfeit the 2010 Community Oriented Policing Methamphetamine Initiative Grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice. CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT: No Impact. ATTACHMENTS P300 No. 20872
