HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 09212010 - C.41RECOMMENDATION(S): APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $3,845 from Dow Chemical Company’s Community Advisory Panel (CAP) and Dow Pittsburg Operations to provide library programming at the Antioch Library for teens and tweens for the period of November 1, 2010 through August 31, 2011. FISCAL IMPACT: No library fund match. BACKGROUND: The Dow Chemical Company’s Community Advisory Panel (CAP) in conjunction with Dow Pittsburg Operations fund programs that focus on education, science, or the environment and serve East Contra Costa Communities. The Antioch Library has not received a grant from Dow in the past. With grant funds, the Antioch Library will offer a series of seven hands-on science and math workshops for teens and tweens. These workshops will stimulate participants’ interest in math and science, increase library program attendance and thus raising awareness of library resources, form a foundation for lifelong learning, and support school curriculum. These programs will bring part of museums’ resources (such as the Chabot Space and Science Center) to Antioch. CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT: The proposed programs provide a chance for teens and tweens to participate in hands-on science and math activities and build their excitement for and increase interest in the subject areas. When engaged, children perform better in school. This series of workshops support the community outcome of “children ready for and succeeding in school.”
