PRESENTATION of StormReady certification to the County by the National Weather
Service.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No fiscal impact.
BACKGROUND:
Through collaboration between the Office of the Sheriff, the Public Works Department, and
the Flood Control and Water Conservation Districts working with the National Weather
Service (NWS)-Monterey, Contra Costa County has become more weather resilient. The
Public Works Department, Flood Control District and the Water Conservation District have
various weather measuring devices throughout the county that monitor rising creeks. The
Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services provides public outreach to the community in the
event of inclement weather through the Community Warning System and participates in
regular conference calls with the National Weather Service during times of extreme
weather. Because of these efforts, the National Weather Services has certified the County as
StormReady.

Subject:PRESENTATION of StormReady certification to the County by the National Weather Service
BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
recognized as StormReady by the National Weather Service provides the County with a
several benefits. First, it provides a network to build stronger partnerships with other
agencies. Second, it will strengthen action plans and provide multiple means to receive and
distribute hazard information. Third, it provides public education through promotion and
participation in weather spotter training and exercises. Last, it gives National Flood
Insurance Program eligibility for additional ISO community rating system points leading to
lower flood insurance premiums for citizens in the county.
