Subject:Apply for and Accept a US Department of Justice 2010 COPS Hiring Grant
BACKGROUND:
Budget cuts forced the reduction in Sheriff's Office programs over the last few years. Last
fiscal year 109 deputy positions were either frozen or eliminated. From 2002-2010 more
than 120 positions were eliminated, including a J-Team, the Sheriff's Crime Prevention
Unit, and the police services contract with the City of San Ramon. Additional resources are
needed to bolster the patrol program.
The 2010 U.S. Department of Justice, Community Oriented Policing Hiring Program Grant
(CHP) is a competitive grant program that, if successful, will give the Sheriff's Office the
funding necessary to hire up to 18 deputies and give the City of Oakley the funding
necessary to hire up to 2 officers. The deputies and officers will need to be retained for the
life of the three year grant funding and one additional year as a condition of the grant.
