HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 06152010 - C.21RECOMMENDATION(S): Approve and Authorize the Purchasing Agent to execute a Purchase Order with Dell Marketing, on behalf of the Treasurer-Tax Collector, to purchase a Network Server system in an amount not to exceed $114,338. FISCAL IMPACT: The total cost of the Network Server system (three new Dell servers, UPS Battery Back-ups, and Dell VMWare High Availability Software) is $114,338. Funding will come from unclaimed duplicate payments. BACKGROUND: The Treasurer-Tax Collector is currently running BackupExec v9.1, a tape drive and system which are 6 years old. As the system ages, the chance of failure increases exponentially. One backup battery has already failed causing a fire in the server room which resulted in fire personnel breaking down the server room door and staff redirecting their efforts to rebuild the system. If the entire system fails it will be take the Treasure-Tax Collector's Office an extended period of time to bring the system back online. The new system will save hours of staff time and APPROVE OTHER RECOMMENDATION OF CNTY ADMINISTRATOR RECOMMENDATION OF BOARD COMMITTEE Action of Board On: 06/15/2010 APPROVED AS RECOMMENDED OTHER Clerks Notes: VOTE OF SUPERVISORS Contact: Meredith Boeger, 925-957-2806 I hereby certify that this is a true and correct copy of an action taken and entered on the minutes of the Board of Supervisors on the date shown. ATTESTED: June 15, 2010 David J. Twa, County Administrator and Clerk of the Board of Supervisors By: , Deputy cc: C.21 To:Board of Supervisors From:William J. Pollacek, Treasurer-Tax Collector Date:June 15, 2010 Contra Costa County Subject:Treasurer-Tax Collector Network Server System BACKGROUND: (CONT'D) will protect business operations. In an effort to meet the operation demands, the Treasurer-Tax Collector currently deploys a single VMWare ESXi host on a Dell PowerEdge R710. This machine is now hosting three Virtual Servers. These virtual servers are a part of the core operations including two database servers and the cashiering application server. The R710 is a single point of failure for operations. The new Network Server system will allow the Treasurer-Tax Collector to modernize the operation by deploying a fault tolerant solution and updated backup software/hardware. The Dell VMWare High Availability solution will allow the Treasurer-Tax Collector to set up multiple servers in a redundant configuration so that failure will not disrupt business operations. This will allow for business continuity in the event of multiple hardware failures. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: Continued equipment failure and system down time will be expected without replacement. Failure will disrupt Treasury operations and Cashiering operations.
