APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in
the amount of $3,000 from First 5 Contra Costa to provide programs and materials for
preschoolers at the Oakley Library for the period of July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No library fund match.
BACKGROUND:
The Oakley Library will use the First 5 grant to fund 12 monthly programs, combining story
hours featuring a variety of audio books, children’s books, and constructive play with Lego
toys. The programs are designed to develop early literacy and motor skills and address the
growing need for family-friendly community activities.
CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:
This program supports the community outcomes of Children Ready for and Succeeding in
School. By introducing children 0 to 5 years to storytime, developing their listening

and comprehension skills, and fostering a creative and enjoyable atmosphere at the library,
this program will encourage children and their families to place a high priority on reading.
The early literacy skills and kindergarten readiness provided by this type of activity will
help prepare emergent readers, encourage those who may be reluctant readers, and introduce
the community’s children to new formats for reading enjoyment.
