HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 05182010 - C.33RECOMMENDATION(S): APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $3,000 from First 5 Contra Costa Children and Families Commission to provide materials and furnishings for the El Sobrante Library for the period of July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011. FISCAL IMPACT: No library fund match. BACKGROUND: Recognizing that early learning, parental involvement, and supportive communities play a critical role in young children's growth and literacy, the El Sobrante Library is applying for a $3,000 grant from First 5 Contra Costa to create a colorful and comfortable Family Place in the children’s section of the library. The Family Place will allow parents, pre-readers, and early readers to have a safe and stimulating place to gather, read, and engage in pre-reading activities. Additionally, the children's area will be improved by replacing severely outdated displays with more modern and attractive displays designed to contain current library media and by purchasing some new early literacy books and music. CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT: This project supports the outcome of children ready for and succeeding in school. The El Sobrante Library Family Place will nurture children's development during the critical first years of life, by increasing accessibility to library materials, it will enhance children’s library and learning experiences. The comfortable adult and child-sized furniture will also make the children’s section an inviting place for families with pre- and early readers to spend time looking at books, using writing materials, and engaging in other pre-reading activities.
