HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 04132010 - C.58RECOMMENDATION(S): ADOPT Resolution No. 2010/183 approving and authorizing the District Attorney, or designee, to submit an application and execute a grant award agreement and any extensions or amendments thereof, pursuant to State guidelines, with the State Department of Insurance for the 2010 Automobile Insurance Fraud Prosecution Program in an amount not to exceed $449,848, for the investigation and prosecution of automobile insurance fraud crimes, for the period July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011. FISCAL IMPACT: $449,848 in grant revenue; 100% State. The anticipated grant award amount has been included in the 2010/11 Recommended Budget. BACKGROUND: The State Legislature has determined that one of the significant factors driving up the cost of automobile insurance is fraud. While fraud is recognized as a growing problem across the country, California is an area of concerted criminal activity in insurance fraud. Kochly, District Attorney Date:April 13, 2010 Contra Costa County Subject:Approval to Submit an Application and Execute a Grant Award for funding of Automobile Insurance Fraud Prosecution Program BACKGROUND: (CONT'D) Fraud Program grants to fund the investigation and prosecution of automobile insurance fraud cases statewide. The grant application will fund salaries and benefits for an attorney, an investigator, and one half-time clerk assigned to the program. The Automobile Insurance Fraud Prosecution grant award is allocated from a trust fund financed by an assessment on all insured vehicles in the State. Appropriations and estimated revenue for this grant have been included in the 2010/11 Recommended Budget.
