Schroder Bridge in honor of former Walnut Creek Councilmember, Metropolitan Transportation Commissioner, and Contra Costa County Supervisor Robert I. Schroder. FISCAL IMPACT: None BACKGROUND: Robert I. Schroder (Bob) was born in San Francisco, CA on July 22, 1928. He is married to Frances S. Schroder and they have three children: Rob Schroder, Mayor of Martinez, CA and President of Schroder Insurance, Susan Mendes and Sharon Schalgal, both of whom are schoolteachers. Bob began his career in public service as an appointee to the city of Walnut Creek’s Park and Recreation and Planning Commission. Later, he was elected to the Walnut Creek City Council, where he served for 16 years, three of which as Mayor. In 1964, he became the first member to preside on the Board of Directors for the Contra Costa Consolidated Fire District. In 1976, Robert I. Bonilla, District IV Supervisor Date:March 23, 2010 Contra Costa County Subject:Iron Horse Trail Pedestrian/Bicycle Overcrossing, Contra Costa Centre Area BACKGROUND: (CONT'D) was elected to the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors where he served for 16 years, three times as Board Chair. In his Board tenure he worked with then County Supervisor Sunne Wright McPeak to develop and adopt what is now referred to as the Contra Costa Centre Specific Plan (1983), and the Contra Costa Centre Redevelopment Plan (1984). Bob also authored the Board of Supervisor’s 1988 Policy Statement that led to the County’s acquisition of the Iron Horse Corridor and its preservation as a transportation corridor. In 1978, he was appointed to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and in 1980 he spearheaded the formation of the Central Contra Costa Transit Authority where he served as its first Chairman. Later, he served as Chair of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and he retired from the Board of Supervisors in 1992. Bob exhibited significant leadership on issues related to transportation, particularly the use of alternative modes of transport such as bicycles and walking. The Contra Costa Centre transit-oriented development program is testament to his belief in the use of all transportation modes. Bob Schroder’s legacy as a leading member of the community is demonstrated in his many community affiliations’ such as Contra Costa Food Bank Director, Chairman of the Red Cross Chapter, Past President of the Walnut Creek Historical Society, member of the Board of Directors for John Muir Hospital, member of the Kennedy-King Scholarship Fund Board, member of the Walnut Creek Rotary Club, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Vestry member and stewardship, and as a member of the Walnut Creek Walnut Festival Committee starting in 1937.
