BACKGROUND
This Contract provides important community services to prevent alcohol and drug abuse and
to promote mental health, including efforts to reduce the incidence of fetal alcohol
syndrome, to educate the parents of preschool children about the dangers of substance
abuse, to reduce alcohol and drug abuse among elementary and high school students, and to
organize and educate community groups about the problems of substance abuse and mental
illness.
CONSEQUENCES OF NEGATIVE ACTION
Failure to approve this contract extension will result in the termination of the existing
contract on its present expiration date of February 28, 1985. There would likely be no
short-term adverse consequences, other than a reduction in community. understanding,
awareness, and involvement in the problems of substance abuse and mental illness;
however, over the next decade, there would, arguably, be a greater incidence of substance
abuse and mental illness among the citizens of Contra Costa County.
