HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 02232010 - C.53RECOMMENDATION(S):
APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in
the amount of $900 from the California State Library to provide special Dia de los Ninos
(Day of the Child) programming at the Antioch, Pittsburg, and San Pablo Libraries for the
period of April 15, 2010 through May 15, 2010.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No fiscal impact.
BACKGROUND:
The Dia de los Ninos/Dia de los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Books) is a statewide
project funded by the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) through the California
State Library. Celebrated internationally since the 1920s, in recent years the Day of the
Child has grown to take on the significance as an observation of the power of literacy to
change young lives and has been a rallying point for librarians, educators, and authors to
promote library and literacy services to diverse and bilingual communities. If the grant is
approved a special, bi-lingual puppet show will be presented in San Pablo at a community
Festival and at the Pittsburg and Antioch

Libraries. In addition, the grant will provide bi-lingual children’s books to give to those who
attend these three events.
Although “Dia”, as this project is also known, has been celebrated at Contra Costa County
Community Libraries in the past, this was not ever done using LSTA grant funds.
CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:
The Dia de los Ninos/Dia de los Libros program meets the outcome of communities that are
safe and provide a high quality of life for children and families. The programs will increase
the Library’s ability to offer safe and culturally relevant programs in a culturally relevant
environment. Programs and activities will support performers and the purchase of books
that have been identified by grant sponsors as meaningful and relevant to bi-lingual children
