FISCAL IMPACT: No impact from this report. BACKGROUND: 1. H1N1 influenza has been a major health issue for Contra Costa and the nation since April 2009. As of January 14, 2010, 337 Contra Costa residents have been hospitalized for H1N1 flu and there have been 14 H1N1 related deaths among county residents. 2. H1N1 vaccine became available in October 2009 and between October 2009 and January 2010,, Contra Costa Health Services and other health providers in Contra Costa received approximately 390,000 doses. The vaccine was to be administered to those at highest risk and then, as more vaccine became available, to all residents. This important effort is ongoing to ensure the best protection of Contra Costa residents. Contra Costa Health Services’ Public Health Division administered approximately 40,000 doses of flu vaccine, in fifty-seven school-based flu vaccination clinics, four large community flu clinics, and forty-four “storefront” flu vaccination clinics. The Contra Costa Medical Center and Health Centers administered approximately 29,000 doses of flu vaccine, both seasonal and H1N1. 4. In addition, antiviral medications were distributed by our community partners Rite Aid and Walgreens pharmacies, through a contract agreement with Contra Costa Health Services. These medications were for persons with high risk of complications who were exposed to H1N1 and those with severe flu illness. These antiviral medications were from a State stockpile for uninsured Contra Costa residents. 5. A total of 644 individual volunteers, most of whom are affiliated with the following businesses, cities, agencies, and County departments, participated in the conduct of these flu vaccination clinics We thank them for their time and resources, without which this widespread effort would not have been possible. Contra Costa providers, including Contra Costa Health Services, will continue to vaccinate residents with H1N1 vaccine through the spring. There are 54 additional school clinics planned in January and February 2010 and vaccine is available in the Health Centers and in the Public Health Immunization Clinics. Contra Costa Health Plan Advice Nurses answered thousands of flu calls.
