APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Sheriff-Coroner, or designee, to donate obsolete forensic
trace evidence instrumentation to the University of California at Davis, Forensic Science
Program and remove such items from the departmental inventory.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No net County costs.
BACKGROUND:
The Forensic Services Division of the Office of the Sheriff has numerous obsolete pieces of
trace evidence instrumentation and accessories, which are no longer effective or necessary
to the Sheriff's Forensic operations. The majority of these instruments are up to ten years
old, and may have been originally purchased with special revenues such as federal grants.
All items have completed their useful life, are fully depreciated, and are currently in
storage. The surplus and disposal of this equipment would be cumbersome and costly to the
County. The University of California at Davis has expressed an interest in using this
equipment in its Graduate Forensic Science Program and will facilitate the removal and
transportation of all items. The University of California at Davis has the expertise on
