ATTESTED: September 15, 2009 David J. Twa, County Administrator and Clerk of the Board of Supervisors By: Celicia Nelson, Deputy cc: Tasha Scott, Barbara Borbon C.81 To:Board of Supervisors From:William Walker, M.D., Health Services Director Date:September 15, 2009 Contra Costa County Subject:Family Medicine Residency Fellowship development BACKGROUND: (CONT'D) of strong new educational relationships with programs in the rest of the Bay Area. This academic year, we were able to jointly operate a Residency Fellowship with the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health. This program will dramatically improve the public health training of the residency and will also add remarkably to the public health competency of CCRMC and Health Centers. Additionally, this Fellowship program allows us to hire a fully trained, board eligible physician to provide patient services for a salary well below the cost of typical new hires. The trade off for this benefit to the County is a commitment to pay the first year tuition for the fellow at UC Berkeley. This amounts to $30,000. When adding this amount to the salary paid to the fellow, the total is still considerably less than the cost of a new staff physician to do the same clinical work.
