HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 08042009 - C.39RECOMMENDATION(S): Approve and Authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee (Sherman Quinlan), to execute, on behalf of the County, Grant Agreement #28-759-2 (TEA16-08-23) with California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) to pay the County an amount not to exceed $411,985, for the Environmental Health Waste Tire Enforcement Program, for the period from June 30, 2009 through June 30, 2010. FISCAL IMPACT: Approval of this grant agreement will result in an amount not to exceed $411,985 of funding from the CIWMB, for the Environmental Health Waste Tire Enforcement Program, for the period from June 30, 2009 through June 30, 2010. No County funds required. BACKGROUND: California has more registered vehicles than any other state. As a result, approximately 40.2 million reusable and waste tires are generated each year. About 1.5 million waste tires are already stockpiled throughout the state, posing a health and safety risk for the public. With this funding, CCC will be able to monitor and reduce illegal waste tire practices, educate and enforce proper waste tire management throughout the county, assist in reducing potential vector problems and preventing tires fires and otherwise protecting public health and safety. On December 16, 2008, the Board of Supervisors approved submission of application #28-759-1 with CIWMB. Approval of Grant Agreement #28-759-2 will allow CWIMB to pay the County to support the Environmental Health Waste Tire Enforcement Program through June 30, 2010, including agreeing to indemnify and hold the State harmless for claims arising out of the County’s performance under the Agreement.
