APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Librarian to make an advance payment of $171,701 to
The Library Corporation (TLC), the Library’s current library automation vendor, to migrate
our CARL library system from the Tandem-based CARL.Solution to the UNIX and
SQL/Oracle-based CARL.X. The Library has an existing contract with The Library
Corporation (TLC), formerly CARL Corporation, for the provision and maintenance of the
CARL library system software and hardware and this purchase is covered under the existing
contract. The advance payment constitutes 50% of the total year-one quoted cost to migrate
to CARL.X.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The cost of the $171,701 advance payment is included in the Library's 2008-09 budget.
BACKGROUND:
In 1995, the Library contracted with the CARL Corporation, now The Library Corporation
(TLC), to install, maintain and upgrade a CARL integrated library system. The
CARL.Solution system was based on a Tandem K2000, which was installed in November
1995 and replaced with

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
a Tandem S7402 in March 2002. The Tandem server is due for replacement in 2010. TLC is
now developing the CARL system software to run on a UNIX platform. TLC will cease
development of the Tandem-based product upon release of version 5.5 in October 2009. The
Library will migrate to the UNIX platform and CARL.X in January 2010.
