Subject:Oral Update on H1N1 Flu and Related Actions
CLERK'S ADDENDUM
Dr. Walker, Health Services Director, said that in the past week the Health Services
Department and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) had re-evaluated school closure
guidelines. Both concluded that the H1N1 virus is comparable in severity to the seasonal
flu and continued school closures were not necessary. He said all Contra Costa County
schools reopened on Wednesday, May 6, 2009.
Dr. Brunner, Public Health Director, said that all cases of the virus in Contra Costa
County have been mild. He said the testing intended to detect the origin and spread of the
virus will slow now that it is known the virus is widespread and relatively mild. He noted
that because this is a new virus there will continue to be close monitoring of the illness.
He said there will be review of the implementation of emergency operating plans to learn
from this outbreak and possibly implement improvements. Dr. Brunner said he
anticipated this to be the last update needed but would return to the Board immediately if
the situation changes.
