SUBJECT: November 1984 Designated
National Hospice Month
WHEREAS hospice care has been demonstrated to be a humani-
tarian way for terminally ill patients to approach the end of their
lives in relative comfort with appropriate , competent and compassionate
care in an environment of personal individuality and dignity; and
WHEREAS hospice care is proving to be an effective and
economical alternative to unnecessary institutionalization for many
terminally ill patients; and
WHEREAS hospice care is rapidly becoming a full partner in
the nation' s health care delivery system;
WHEREAS the enactment of a hospice benefit under Medicare ,
which became effective November 1 , 1983, makes it possible for many
more elderly Americans to have the opportunity to elect to receive
hospice care; and
WHEREAS there remains a great need to increase public
awareness of the benefits of hospice care;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of
Contra Costa County officially DESIGNATES November 1984 as National
Hospice Month in Contra Costa County, and URGES all its citizens to
recognize and support the hospice movement .
