Approve and authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee (Wendel Brunner,
M.D.), to execute, on behalf of the County, Grant Agreement #28-318 with San Diego State
University Research Foundation, to pay the County an amount not to exceed $1,394 for the
Smart Growth Professional Development Project, for the period from March 1, 2009
through February 28, 2010, including agreeing to indemnify and hold the grantor harmless
for any claims arising out of the County’s performance under the Agreement.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Approval of this grant will result in $1,394 from San Diego State University Research
Foundation to fund the Smart Growth Professional Development Project for the Public
Health, Community Wellness and Prevention Programs (CW&PP). No County match
required.
BACKGROUND:
In recent years, Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) has become a leader among Bay
Area Health Departments in researching and applying “built environment” approaches

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
to injury prevention. Ensuring that local governments adopt policies that foster safe walking
and bicycling environments for children is a goal that can create healthier, more active
communities. The goal of this Smart Growth Professional Development Project is to further
the professional development of County staff working to prevent unintentional childhood
injuries. Approval of this Grant Agreement #28-318 will support conference attendance for
a Senior Health Education Specialist to learn about built environment focused strategies to
promote health and safety through February 28, 2010.
