ADOPT Resolution to recognize Sabiha Gokcen for her 16 years of service to the Contra Costa County Hazardous
Materials Commission.
FISCAL IMPACT:
None.
BACKGROUND:
Sabiha Gokcen began her service on the Contra Costa County Hazardous Materials Commission in 1993 representing
Communities for a Safer Environment in one of the Environmental Seats. In 1997 she changed to representing the
Contra Costa Taxpayers Association in one of the business seats. In 2005 she was elected by the other members of
the Commission to be Chairperson, a position she held for four years until her term expired at the end of 2008.
During her 16 years on the Contra Costa County Hazardous Materials Commission Sabiha Gokcen contributed
substantially to the efforts of the Commission, especially in the field of industrial safety, where her expertise and
leadership helped craft a series of accident prevention and land use ordinances leading to the eventual adoption of
Contra Costa County’s landmark Industrial Safety Ordinance.
