Contra
Costa
County
Subject:LICENSE FOR THE INSTALLATION OF A LIBRARY BOOK DISPENSING MACHINE AT 14830
HIGHWAY 4, DISCOVERY BAY
FISCAL IMPACT:
The Contra Costa County Library received a grant from the California State Library
Services Technology Act's Grant Program to introduce automated book dispensing
machines to the County. The cost of installing and operating this book dispensing machine
will be paid for by those funds.
BACKGROUND:
A County Regional Needs Assessment for County Libraries previously presented to the
Board of Supervisors, reported that inequities in library service delivery existed in Far East
County. Through a previous action, the Board directed the County Librarian to identify
options for improving service to county residents. The book dispensing kiosks were a result
of that work. A book dispensing machine, or "Bokomaten," is a free-standing machine that
allows customers to borrow and return library books and media using a library card. The
County agrees to indemnify and hold harmless Longs and Pacific/Bowie Tracy II as part of
this License.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
The County will have to find another location for the book dispensing machine, or the
residents of Far East County may have to travel farther to get library materials.
