Approve and authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee (Wendel Brunner,
M.D.), to accept on behalf of the County, Grant Award #28-692-2 (#20081186) for the
California Endowment, to pay the County an amount not to exceed $225,000, for the
Community Action to fight Asthma/Contra Costa Asthma Coalition Project, for the period
July 1, 2008 through February 28, 2010.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Approval of this Grant Award will result in an amount not to exceed $225,000 in funding
from the California Endowment for the Department’ Community Action to fight
Asthma/Contra Costa Asthma Coalition Project. No County funds required.
BACKGROUND:
The Contra Costa Asthma Coalition Project will address the higher than average rate of
asthma in children throughout Contra Costa County. This project interfaces with several
other County Programs, such as the County’s Health Plan and Public Health Clinics that
provide case management services to child asthmatics. One key priority of the California

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
Asthma Initiatives is to effectively collaborate with existing programs and projects in order
to maximize the County’s ability to reduce the negative impact of asthma on children in
Contra Costa.
Approval of Grant Award #28-692-2 will allow funding to the Department for the coalition
to continue to meet its objectives of educating and organizing West County residents about
asthma and air pollution issues, and how to advocate for policy changes that will reduce
environmental triggers for asthma through February 28, 2010.
