SUBJECT: COMMENDATIONS - - BYRON BOYS RANCH
AIR CONDITIONING PROJECT
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
BACKGROUND: I am pleased to see the combined efforts of
individuals ana representatives from the public and private sector
have resulted in the completion of the air conditioning project
for the Byron Boys Ranch. The following individuals should be
commended for the significant part each played toward the completion
of this much-needed air conditioning system:
WARREN SMITH - - For several years , Warren has been involved
with t e youth of Contra Costa County, with a special concern
for dependent children and drug education programs in all of
our schools . After serving as a member of the Grand Jury,
Warren became interested in the Boys Ranch Program and was
very much involved in securing the air conditioning unit in
the kitchen and dining hall at the Ranch.
BETTY 'VIRAMONTES - - Betty, indeed, has a special interest in
the Boys Ranch . A member of her family graduated from the
Boys Ranch and she was very supportive of their program. When
Betty heard of the need for air conditioning in the kitchen
and dining hall , she made many calls and contacts and was
successful in getting others involved. Betty is presently
employed by the District Attorney' s Western Division office .
C. JAMES BASTIAEN - - "C.J . " Bastiaen is President and Owner
of Ke - ire Incorporated. His company provided the material ,
labor and expertise needed to start and complete the air con-
ditioning project at Boys Ranch. "C.J. " also has a special
interest in the youngsters committed to Boys Ranch.
U. S . STEEL CORPORATION, HAROLD F DOWNIE - - For many years
now, Ha--Was to en a specia interest in the Boys Ranch
Program. Prior to his retirement, Hal worked for United States
Steel for 362 years . He held various management positions
and has been actively involved in the community in Contra
Costa County . U.S . Steel donated the sheet metal for the
duct work.
JIM GAUL - - Jim is the construction supervisor for Kel-Aire .
Jima the time and .patience to .teach several wards from
the Boys Ranch .how to help with the construction and installa-

tion of the air conditioning project . Jim felt the boys
involved worked very hard and were very interested in
learning sheet metal work .
KATHLEEN MACLAY - - Kathleen is a reporter for Lesher Communi-
cations , Inc . She has been responsible for. many feature
stories and editorials regarding the need for an air condi-
tioner in the kitchen and dining hall at the Boys Ranch. The
county-wide interest that Kathleen generated through the
media did much toward achievement of their goal for this
air conditioner .
RECOMMENDED ACTION : I will be attending the Byron Boys Ranch
Open House this Fri ay and it would give me great pleasure to present
in behalf of the :Board of Supervisors official certificates of commen-
dations to the above individuals in recognition .of their worthwhile
efforts .
