HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 09232008 - 2008/644IN THE MATTER OF RECOGNIZING RESOLUTION NO. 2008/644 CAROL ELDER FOR BEING NAMED A FINALIST FOR CONTRA COSTA COUNTY "TEACHER OF THE YEAR" WHEREAS, Carol Elder grew up in a small rural cotntnunity on the plains of Kansas during the 1960s where career choices for women were limited to beautician, secretary, nurse, or teacher, and her mother, who had been a teacher in a one -room schoolhouse teaching all eight grades, was instrumental in seeing that Carol had an opportunity to attend college; and WHEREAS, Carol Elder, in 1970 at age 20, graduated from a small private church -related college named Phillips University located in Enid,Oklahoml, and =front 19.24-1975 she continued her graduate education at the University of Northern Coloxndo'in Gieeley to oliiatn�a,Master's of Art degree in Early Childhood Education,- and-'.-,----. WHEREAS, Carol Elder rn Ithe 1970s had1.-a.nuniber of teaching oppor 1u11�, i 'esIle iii�Colorado, Virginia, and North Carolina where she obtained experience teaching'at. the kindergarten level , first grade, second grade, and the upper. grades as well7as special education; and WHEREAS, Carol Elder•reituned to Kansas in the 1980s-to_hve in the small rural community of Fredonia where she completed the licensing procedure ,to become the owner; directoi=, ,and teacher of Little Learner's Pieschool; and m WHEREAS;''Caro1°Elder taught at Building Blocks Preschool in Colorado from 1992untrl 20.01 alongside Jean Youngman: ,Carol and Jean worked to create the premiere preschool in,� e growing community of zir 65,000.
