CAROL ELDER
FOR BEING NAMED A FINALIST
FOR CONTRA COSTA COUNTY
"TEACHER OF THE YEAR"
WHEREAS, Carol Elder grew up in a small rural cornmunity on the plains of Kansas during the 1960s
where career choices for women were limited to beautician, secretary, nurse, or teacher, and her mother,
who had been a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse teaching all eight grades, was instrumental in seeing
that Carol had an opportunity to attend college; and
WHEREAS, Carol Elder, in 1970 at age 20, graduated from a small private church-related college named
Phillips University located in Enid, Oklahoml, and =from 19.24-1975 she continued her graduate
education at the University of Northern Coloxnd,-., Gieeley to 61iiarn�a-Master's of Art degree in Early
Childhood Education; and-'.-,----.
WHEREAS, Carol Elder m Ithe 1970s had1.-a.nuniber of teaching oppor 1u11�, i '6sIle rri�Colorado, Virginia, and
North Carolina where she obtained experience teaching'at. the kindergarten level,first grade, second
grade,and the upper grades as well7as special education;and
WHEREAS, Carol Elder•reituned to Kansas in die 1980s-to_hve in the small rural community of Fredonia
where she completed the licensing procedure ,to become the owner; directoi=, ,and teacher of Little

Learner's Preschool;and

WHEREAS;''Caro1°Elder taught at Building Blocks Preschool to Colorado from 1992untd 20.01 alongside
Jean Youngman:,Carol and Jean worked to create the premiere preschool in the g>owing community of

WHEREAS, Carol Elder takes the leadership-role.of't1e school's "Gingerbread Man" performance, liaison
with PTA, and is the presenter at.the'I<tmdergartet oOxlentati
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED--THAT THE°-CONTRA COSTA COUNTY BOARD
OF SUPERVISORS HEREBY recognizes Carol Elder for her contributions to the Byron Union
School District and Timber Point Elementary as well as her dedication to education and congratulates Ms.
Elder for being named Byron Union School District"Teacher of the Year."
