HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 09232008 - 2008 622 In the Matter of Proclaiming ) September 15 to October 15, 2008 ) As "HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH") In Contra Costa County By Honoring ) LA CLINICA DE LA RAZA On Its ) 36T ANNIVERSARY ) RESOLUTION NO. 2008/522 WHEREAS, La Clinica de La Raza, Inc. was founded in 1971 by a group of volunteers including doctors, community members, and students from the University of California at Berkeley; and WHEREAS, La Clinica volunteers was founded to offer low-cost healthcare to residents who could not afford it; and WHEREAS, La Clinica has expanded from its first clinic in Oakland to 23 clinics serving more than 44,000 patients at 23 sites in Alameda, Solano and Contra Costa counties including two medical clinics in Pittsburg and Pleasant Hill; their dental clinic in Pittsburg and with a Dental Care Mobile unit; and WHEREAS, La Clinica celebrates its 36°i anniversary this year on September 20, 2008; and WHEREAS, La Clinica's Pittsburg Clinic is holding its 4th Annual Health Fair on October 25, 2008 at Pittsburg Adult School, 1151 Stoneman Avenue, Pittsburg, California; and WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th,to commemorate the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, in addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16th, and Chile on September 18th, and Christopher Columbus, sailing under the flag of Spain landed in the"New World on October 12, 1492; and WHEREAS, the first exploration of Contra Costa C6unty by non-Native Americans was performed by in 1772 by the Fages Expedition out of Monterey, California when the party explored the area from the eastern shoreline of San Francisco Bay to the area that is now Antioch; and WHEREAS, Spanish and Mexican soldiers and ranchers settled the County after being awarded Spanish and Mexican land grants, including Rancho Canada de los Vaqueros, Rancho Los Meganos, Rancho Los Medanos, Rancho Miguel, Rancho Monte de Diablo, and the two Ranchos San Ramon; and WHEREAS, many of the names of many of the County's principal communities and landmarks are named after Spanish and Mexican pioneers or are derived from Spanish words,including Martinez, Moraga,Orinda, El Sobrante, El Cerrito, Alamo, Pacheco, San Pablo, Port Costa, San Ramon, Los Vaqueros reservoir,Mount Diablo and the name of the county itself, Contra Costa, which mean "opposite coast,"; and WHEREAS, Latino ethnic and national groups continue to grow and are a vital segment of Contra Costa County's economic, cultural and political life. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County, California does hereby proclaim September 15 to October 15, 2008 as Hispanic Heritage Month, and call on the people of Contra Costa County, county agencies, school districts and communities in Contra Costa County use their resources to highlight Hispanic individuals and their contributions to the county and to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities in conjunction with the 36`x'Anniversary of La Clinica and its October 25th Health Fair.
