HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 09232008 - 2008 622 (2) i/jGP C�i!Y�%Gr (e2 I IN THE MATTER OF PROCLAIMING RESOLUTION NO. 2008/622 SEPTEMBER 15 TO OCTOBER 15, 2008 AS "HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH" BY HONORING LA CLINICA DE LA RAZA WHEREAS, La Clinica de La Raza, Inc., was founded in 1971 by a group of volunteers including doctors, community members, and students froth the University of California at Berkeley; and WHEREAS, La Clinica was founded to offer low-cost healthcare to residents who could not afford it;and WHEREAS, La Clinica has expanded from its first clinic in Oakland to 23 clinics serving more than 44,000 patients at 23 sites in Alameda, Solano, and Contra Costa counties including two medical clinics in Pittsburg and Pleasant Hill; their dental clinic in Pittsburg and a Dental Care Mobile unit; and ; ., WHEREAS, La Clinica celebrates its=36th anniversary this year oti September 20,2008; and :, s WHEREAS, La Clinica's Pittsburg'Clinic is, holding its 4th -Annual Health_Fair on October 25, 2008 at Pittsburg Adult Scbool,,1.1,51�,Stonernan A'venue,-Pittsburg,„California;;and,>„ WHEREAS, Hispanic HeiitageMMonth:begins on September 15, 2008, toRccimmemt rate the anniversary of independence for five Latin Am6rican'-countries Cosa Rica El Salvador, Guatemala,Honduras, and Nicaragua;`and in addition;' Mexico declared its independence on Septeml?ci 16th, and Chile on September 18th',aad Christopher Columbus, sailing,under theiflag of Spain, landed in?,the New World 0110 n October 12,1492; WHEREf1S, the:.first exploration of Contra-Costa Countyy non Native Americans'occurredin 1772 when the Fages Expedition out of,.Monterey, California explored the area from theeitstern shoreline of San Fr:inci`sco Bay to.the area that is now Antioch;and Z WHEREAS, Spamsh and Mexican_soldiei .and ranchers settled the county ifter being 1lvarded-'Spanish and Mexican,l iild grants including Rancho:Canada de los;Vaqueros, Rancho''L;os Meganos,i+Rancho Los Medanos,Rancho Miguel;Rancho Monte de Diablo and the two Ranchos San Itamon,°and;;' , > WHEREAS, many of,the;nimes.,of many of'thelCountyis principal commuinties and landmarks are named ,11 after Spanisli and Mexican epionee`rs or are”derived,frnm'Spansh word's, including Martinez Moraga, Ori ida,�E1x Sobxaiife, E1 Cerrito„Alamo, Pacheco, Sat Pablo,tPoit'"Costa;San kdirion,`Los Vaqueros reservoirount Diablo and"the name of the county'itself tGontra Costa;whlcli�mean`=opposite coast"; and J 3 WHEREAS, Latino et Ind'national `groups continue to grow and Ire ivital segine'nt of Contra Costa County's economic;rcultural aiid political life;..... =`r, NOW, THEREFORE, BE' T%RESOLVED, that the=:Board ,o 20 f Supervisors' does hereby proclaim #I September 15 to October�l5 08=as Hispanic Heritage Mont9 in Contra'Costa County, and calls on citizens, county agencies,:scAool districts and-common nessin Contra-Costa County use their resources to highlight Hispanic individuals cad their contributions to theb`county and to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities 'in conjunction with the 36th Anniversary of La Clinica and its October 25th Health Fair. s� FEDERAL D.
