HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 09012004 - 70-736 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Traffic Safety on the Martinez- } RESOLUTION NUMBER 70/736 Benicia Bridge } WHEREAS the volume of traffic over the Marti nez-�Beni:ci'a Bridge , which is a major span on Interstate Route 680 and a principal link between Contra Costa and Solano Counties as well as a direct route to Sacramento from the county seat of Contra Costa County, has steadily risen since its construction , and WHEREAS the last traffic count made by the State Division of Highways in 1969 showed that 27 ,000 vehicles were passing over the bridge daily; and WHEREAS the completion of the last segment of Interstate Route 680 in the Mission San dose area will undoubtedly- result in a substantial increase in traffic over the bridge.; and WHEREAS serious collisions have occurred on the. bridge, the most recent causing th-e tragic death- of three adults and serious injury to six Girl Scouts; and WHEREAS the collisions in a number of cases. have been caused by cars crossing the median strip and considerable public concern has been expressed over the seemingly increas,i.ng frequency of this type of accident; and WHEREAS in the opinion of this Board the installation of a barrier in the median strip could prove effective in ave.rting collisions of this type in the future; NOW, THEREFORE , BE IT BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY RESOLVED that it hereby- .urges the California State Toll Bridge Authority to take steps to reduce vehicular accidents on the Martinez-Beni.cia Bridge by having a median barrier constructedas soon as possi'bl'e . PASSED and ADOPTED this 4th day of November , 1970 by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors J . P. Kenny, A. M. Dias , J . E. Moriarty, E. A . Linscheid , T. J . Cull . NOES: None. ABSENT: None .
