SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION: 1 . Acknowledge receipt of Internal Operations Committee report on Televents, Inc. 2. Remove this item as a referral to our Committee. BACKGROUND: On January 10, 1984, the Board referred to our Committee a letter from Televents, Inc. We met with Mr. Brian Coyne, Regional Manager for Televents, on February 6, 1984. In August, 1983 Televents, Inc. purchased ATC Cablevision which served the incorporated City of Danville and the unincorporated areas of Orinda, Moraga and the Lafayette area. This purchase made Televents the largest cable television operator in Contra Costa County with approximately 55,000 subscribers. Subsequent to this purchase, the number of complaints regarding the level of service and the ability of subscribers to contact Televents increased significantly. As a result of this, Mr. Brian Coyne, Regional Manager of Televents, requested an opportunity to appear before, the Internal Operations Committee to discuss some of the problems Televents had incurred and changes Televents was making throughout the system to improve the level of service and to rebuild the Cablevision system. Mr. Coyne indicated that in January 1984 the rebuild had started and, when finished, would have a 54-channel capacity as well as community access facilities. He indicated that Televents would be providing remote community access units as well as providing new studios for the El Cerrito area. Further, all community access facilities will be interconnected with studios in Martinez and Lafayette as well as E1 Cerrito. In an effort to provide easier telephone access for subscribers, additional telephone lines have been installed and separate numbers for service, sales, and billing will be operational within two to three months. Heretofore, Televents has utilized a private billing service; they now have a new on-line computer billing service wherein all accounts will be processed internally and mailing will be staggered throughout the month. Mr. Coyne was positive in his assurances that these changes would alleviate some of the problems which have been brought to the Board and staff's attention.
