HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 09102004 - 71-445 BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Resolution Changing Names of ;) County Multipurpose Centers RESOLUTION NO. 71/445 for the Mentally Retarded. } The Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County RESOLVES THAT: On January 7, > 1970 we appointed a committee to explore and recommend an appropriate memorial to the Late Senator George Miller, Jr. ; and On July 28, 1970 Supervisor A. M. Dias, Committee Chair- man, reported that a suitable memorial would be one which reflected the known concern of Senator Miller for the welfare of the mentally retarded and his activities in the field of mental, health; and the committee recommended, therefore, that the Multipurpose Centers for the Mentally Retarded (Hilltop in Richmond and Seal Bluff in Concord) be renamed in his honor; and The Board agreed and asked Supervisor Dias to arrange appropriate ceremonies, and on June 23, 1971. a. memorial ceremony honoring the late State Senator George Miller, Jr. was held in the Board Chambers in the presence of his family and friends; NOW, THEREFORE, the following name changes are made: OFFICIALLY NAMED FROM AND; DESIGNATED _ SEAL BLUFF CENTER located at 3020 Grant Street, GEORGE MILLER, JR. Concord. MEMORIAL CENTER-EAST HILLTOP CENTER 'located at 2801 Hilltop Drive, GEORGE MILLER, JR. Richmond. MEMORIAL CENTER-WEST Said centers are more particularly described in the deeds from the State ;of California to the County of Contra Casts:, re- corded on August 3, 1970 in Bock 6184, Official Records, at pages 495 and 498, respectively. IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Naming the County Multipurpose Center for the Mentally RESOLUTION NUMBER 71/445-A Retarded in Concord as the George Miller, Jr. Memorial Center - East. WHEREAS on January 1, 1969 the people of the County of Contra Costa and of the State of California lost with >the death of Senator George Miller, Jr. , one of the most able legislators ever to serve in the California Legislature; and WHEREAS Senator Miller was elected to the California Assembly in 1946, served in that body for a term of two years, was elected to the California Senate in 1948 and served in that body for two decades without interruption of tenure by virtue of re-elections through overwhelming endorsements of the voters of Contra Costa. County; and TdHERF,AS the stature of Senator Miller in the California Senate was exemplified In his role as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance for 11 years, during which time he contributed immensely to the fiscal stability of the state; and WHEREAS Senator Miller comprehensively represented all the people of the State of California in a dedicated manner and was unusually effective in obtaining passage of progressive legislation; and WHEREAS Senator Miller represented the interests of Contra Costa County with zeal and intensity, as typified by his forceful action to obtain funds for multipurpose centers for the mentally retarded in Contra Costa County and by his tenacious fight to protect the invaluable natural water supply of the county; and WHEREAS Senator Miller always made time despite his demand- ing legislative work schedules to consult with his constituents and was widely known for his loyalty, integrity, generosity, courage humor, eloquence, and wisdom.* NOW, THEREFORE,, BE' IT BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVTSQ.F9 OF THE COUNTY OF CO-NTRA COSTA, CALIFORNIA RESOLVED that it hereby proclaims that it has officially designated the County Multipurpose Center for the Mentally Retarded in Concord, as the George Miller, Jr. Memorial Center - East and thereby commends the devotion and accomplishments of the late Senator George Miller, Jr. to the people of his county and his state as an outstanding example of dedicated public service. PASSED and ADOPTED this 13th day of July, 1971 by the Board.
