IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
OF
CONTRA COSTA. COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
In the Matter of
Extending Congratulations RESOLUTION NUMBER 71/236
to Mr. Harry Hooper
WHEREAS Mr. Harry Hooper, a 1907 graduate of St. Mary's
College, California, has been named to the National Baseball Hall of
Fame,, Cooperstown, New York; and
WHEREAS Harry Hooper began his professional baseball career
in 1907 playing with Oakland and Sacramento of the California State
League; and
WHEREAS Mr. Hooper had a distinguished major league career
playing for twelve years with Boston and five years with Chicago in
the American League; and
WHEREAS major league statistics show that Harry Hooper was
one of the outstanding outfielders of all time as reflected by number
of assists and double plays; timesreachingfirst base as a lead-off
hitter; total of hits, walks, steals, and runs; and runs batted in
and times at bat; and
WHEREAS Harry Hooper holds the World Series record for
outfielding assists and was the first series player to win a game
and a World Series by hitting a home run; and
WHEREAS baseball immortals such as Babe Ruth, John J.
McGraw and Walter Johnson referred to Harry Hooper with expressions
such as "the greatest defensive right fielder in baseballR "the
all time All American League outfield team is Ty Cobb., Tris Speaker
and Harry Hooper,:t and "the toughest of them all In a pinch"; and
WHEREAS Harry Hooper is regarded by all who know him, not
only as a remarkable baseball player, but as a great American, fine
gentleman and true sportsman;
NOW, THEREPOPE., BE IT BY THE 'BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF THE
COUNTY OF CONTRA COSTA, CALIFORNIA RESOLVRD that it expresses to
Mr. Harry Hooper its appreciation for his role as a great American
sportsman, extends to him its hearty congratulations upon being
named to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and wishes for him
continued health and happiness for many, many years to Come.
PASSED and ADOPTED this 6th day of April, 1971 by the
following vote:
AYES: Supervisors A. M. Dias, J. E. Moriarty,
W. N. Boggess, E. A. Linscheid, J. P. Kenny.
