HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 08302004 - 70-600 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY , STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Expressing } Appreciation to the } American Smelting and } RESOLUTION NUMBER 70/600 Refining Company . WHEREAS it has come to the attention of the Board of Supervisors that American Smelting and Refining Company intends , for a variety of reasons , to phase out its lead smelting operation at Selby, California ; and WHEREAS the Selby Smelter , in operation since 1885 , is an industrial pioneer of Contra Costa County and the State of California with antecedants in the metal processing industry dating back to 1850 ; and WHEREAS hundreds of millions of dollars worth of gold and other metals from the mines of the west have passed through the Selby plant during its 85 years of existence , producing tens of millions of wealth for Contra Costa County and providing employment for thousands of persons in five generations , making Selby a by- word in California , and WHEREAS this contribution to the economy of Contra Costa County and California has been of incalculable value; and WHEREAS the loss of this valuable industry is to be regretted by the county and the districts to which American Smelting and Refining Company has contributed so marry millions in taxes ; NOW, THEREFORE , BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors speaks for the citizenry of Contra Costa County in extending thanks to American Smelting and Refining Company for its contribution to the economy of the state and county and in express- ing regret at the adverse turn in economic conditions which have resulted in the company ' s decision to close this historic facility . BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be forwarded to the management of Selby Refinery and to the President of American Smelting and Refining Company in New York City . PASSED AND ADOPTED on September 22 , 1970 by the follow- ing vote of the Board : AYES Supervisors J . P. Kenny, A . M . Dias , J . E . Moriarty , E. A . Linscheid , T . J . Coli . NOES : None.
