A Ridge Landmark in } RESOLUTION NUKE3ER 70/581
Honor of Erwin G. Gudde. }
WHEREAS the Late Erwin G. Gudde is known statewide and nation-
ally as an outstanding chronicler of place names; and
WHEREAS Erwin G. Gudde, who was born in .East Prussia in 1889,
came to the United: States in 1910 as a newspaperman, then decided to
remain in this country, studied at the University of California from
which institution he received a Ph.D. in 1922 and continued at the
University as a member of the German Department faculty until his
retirement as Associate Professor in 1956; and
1*3EREAS Professor Gudde, throughout his lifetime, until his
death. in .1.969, maintained an active interest in horticulture and. con-
servation and was a long-standing member of the Sierra Club; and.
WHEREAS Professor Gudde was the author of a number of out-
standing publications, among there the famous "California Place Names",
which i,s 'recognized. as a model for similar future works and which has
been republished several times; and.
1ATER}AS Professor Crudde resided: ,high in the Orinda hills with
his wife, Elizabeth, from which point they might view a prominent but
unnamed ridge extending easterly from: Robert Sibley Park; and
WHEREAS in the judgment of this Board it is desirable that the
life and works of Professor C"iudde be memorialized by naming after him
a landmark of substantial significance;
NOW, ' -I REFOR;E, BE IT BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF THE
COUNTY OF CONTRA COS'T'A, CALIFORNIA RESOLVED that it hereby officially
recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of Professor Erwin G. Gudde,
particularly his reeea.rah and works on place names in California., and.
approves in his memory the naming of the Orinda ridge extending east-
erly from the Robert Sibley park as the Gudde Ridge.
PASSEL AND ADOPTER this 8th day of September, 1970 by the
following vote of the Hoard.:
