IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
OF
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
In the Matter of Ethiopian Relief ) RESOLUTION NO. 84/732
WHEREAS the citizens of the United States have become
painfully aware of the drought and famine in Ethiopia and the
desperate plight of millions of that country's people; and
WHEREAS Ethiopia's famine and the resulting starvation
will continue to severely affect even those persons who do survive
for many years to come; and
WHEREAS the need to provide immediate assistance to the
people of Ethiopia is of the utmost urgency; and
WHEREAS the citizens of Contra Costa County desire to join
with other Americans in responding to this emergency; and
WHEREAS there are currently efforts being undertaken to
raise relief funds in Contra Costa County as demonstrated by the
City of Richmond proclaiming December 16, 1984 as "Ethiopian Relief
Dayll;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors
of Contra Costa County ENCOURAGES the active involvement of all
Contra Costa citizens in fund raising efforts for the people of
Ethiopia.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors
SUPPORTS and is willing to assist in a countywide effort to
demonstrate the concern of the citizens of Contra Costa County in
alleviating the pain and suffering being endured by the people of
Ethiopia.
PASSED by the Board of Supervisors on December 4, 1984 by
unanimous vote of the Board members present.
I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct

on the date aforesaid.

THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY , CALIFORNIA
Adopted this Order on December 4, 1984 , by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Powers , Fanden , Schroder , McPeak , Torlakson
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
ABSTAIN: None

SUBJECT: Ethiopian Relief Efforts
Reverend H . Eugene Farlough, Jr . and Reverend Phillip C .
Lawson , representing the Greater Richmond Inter-Faith Program ,
appeared before the Board this day and requested the Board' s support
and assistance in efforts to involve the citizens of Contra Costa
County in raising relief funds for the people of Ethiopia .
They advised that the City of Richmond has proclaimed
December 16 , 1984 as "Ethiopian Relief Day" , and that the Greater
Richmond Inter-Faith Program is sponsoring a charity drive and edu-
cational forum to be held at the A 0 H Church of God , 309 36th Street ,
Richmond , at 3: 00 P .M. on December 16 , 1984 . He stated that the
guest speaker will be a representative of Church World Service , an
organization with a 50 year history in dealing with relief situations ,
who has pledged that 100% of the funds collected will be directed to
the Ethiopian appeal .
Supervisor Tom Powers advised that , at the request of
County Administrator Phil Batchelor , the balance remaining in the
County Reception fund was being donated to the U . S . Committee for
UNICEF/N .Y . Branch, with instructions for direct allocation to
Ethiopia . He suggested that the check, in the amount of $864. 12, be
presented at the the December 16 meeting on behalf of the Board of
Supervisors and Senior Staff of Contra Costa County.
Supervisor Powers noted that it would be appropriate to
appoint Reverend Farlough and Reverend Lawson to represent the Board
of Supervisors in the effort to involve all the citizens of Contra
Costa County in the endeavor to raise funds for the people of Ethiopia .
Board members being in agreement , IT IS ORDERED that the
check to the U . S. Committee for UNICEF/N .Y . Branch in the amount of
$864. 12 be PRESENTED on behalf of the Board of Supervisors and the
Senior Staff of Contra Costa County, as a direct donation to the
Ethiopian relief fund .
IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that Reverend H . Eugene Farlough , Jr .
and Reverend Phillip C . Lawson are APPOINTED to represent the Board
of Supervisors in the effort to involve all County residents in the
fund raising endeavor .
