IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

In the Matter of Congratulating )
Safeway and the State Health )
Department regarding the )
Lead Poisoning Project ) RESOLUTION 951355
WHEREAS, Safeway and the State Department of Health Services have begun a unique
and desperately needed public-private partnership to reduce lead poisoning which is an
especially serious health threat to children in our County, and residents of older housing
stock; and
WHEREAS, Safeway is creating an extensive educational advertising program using its
shopping bags and volunteering space in its stores for lead poisoning counseling; and
WHEREAS, lead poisoning has not always received the attention it deserves because it
is a hard to discover and slow acting threat to public health that usually doesn't capture
the attention of the public, press and elected officials; and
WHEREAS, the tragedy of a child's abilities and future being ruined by lead poisoning is
entirely preventable and over 250 Contra Costa County children have been found to have
high levels of lead in their blood;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors issues a Certificate
of Appreciation to Safeway and the California Department of Health Services for their
unique and creative approach to helping reduce this very serious health problem.
Introduced by Supervisor Jim Rogers and Supervisor Mark DeSaulnier the 8th day of
August, 1995.
PASSED and ADOPTED by the unanimous vote of the Board on the eighth day of August,
1995.
