Diablo) State Park on September 19, 1991 ) RESOLUTION NO. 91/585 WHEREAS, the Board has repeatedly expressed its support for the continuation of grazing and the Demonstration Ranch in Mt. Diablo State Park, but has never received a substantive response from the California Department of Parks and Recreation; and WHEREAS, all of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection Districts and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection strongly support the continuation of grazing in Mt. Diablo State Park and other public lands in the county to prevent dangerous accumulations of fuel in grasslands; and WHEREAS, the Contra Costa Resource Conservation District and the range resource scientific community also endorse proper grazing as an essential part of a healthy grassland ecology which prevents the build- up of a heavy thatch of dead grass and weeds, promotes a diversity of wild flowers and native plants, and protects oaks and other trees from being killed by abnormally intense wildfires; and WHEREAS, the California Department of Parks and Recreation' s plan to eliminate or drastically reduce grazing has caused a long and contin- uing controversy, and many homeowners, park users, and local organiza- tions feel that they have not been given the opportunity for an appro- priate exchange of dialogue with the Department relative to their serious concerns. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisor of Contra Costa County wi Tl 'soon_sor a public hearing on the concerns of Contra Costa residents and park users regarding fire hazards, the Demonstration Ranch, natural resources, and other impacts of the California Department of Parks and Recreation' s plan to eliminate or drastically reduce grazing in Mt. Diablo State Park, starting at 7: 00 p..m. , in the Board Chambers, Thursday, September 19, 1991; and `BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Director of the California Parks and Recreation Department with a request that he, or his designated representative, along with appropri- ate members of his staff, appear and participate in this hearing for the express purpose of responding substantively to the concerns of the citizens of Contra Costa County. PASSED AND ADOPTED by unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors present on this 10th day of September, 1991.
