HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 09101991 - 91-584 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE .OF CALIFORNIA IN THE MATTER OF ) PROCLAIMING the week of September) 8-14, 1991 "Celebrate Literacy ) Week" in Contra Costa County. ) RESOLUTION NO. 91/ 584 WHEREAS, the ability to read and write is of fundamental importance to all people; and WHEREAS, as America is a democracy, American citizens need to be able to read and write in order to make informed and educated decisions at the ballot box regarding how they will be governed; and WHEREAS, according to the United States Department of Education, one in five adult Americans is functionally illiterate; and WHEREAS, it is estimated that approximately ' 110,000 residents of Contra Costa County do not possess the skills which would enable them to live up to their full potential; and WHEREAS, both clients and volunteers associated with community adult literacy programs are to be commended for their efforts to improve their society, not only today, but for generations to come; and WHEREAS, since 1984, in Contra Costa County alone, more than 1, 300 volunteer tutors have donated over 175,000 hours to teach adult learners to read and write; and WHEREAS, September 8th is designated as International Literacy Day. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board, of Supervisors of Contra Costa County COMMENDS all the people who are working hard to achieve literacy, for either themselves or others and PROCLAIMS September 8-14, 1.991 to be "Celebrate Literacy Week" in Contra Costa County. PASSED AND ADOPTED by unanimous vote of the Board members present this 10th day of September, 1991.
