By: Jacqueline Pigg, Contracts Administrator _ Costa DATE: September 11,2008 County U n ly J' SUBJECT: Approval of Grant Award#28-787-1 with Center for Human Development SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATIONS)&BACKGROUND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION(S): Approve and authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee (Wendel Brunner, M.D.) to accept on behalf of the County, Grant Award #28-787-1 from the Center for Human Development, in an amount not to exceed $41,892, for the continuation of the Public Health East County Environmental Justice Action Collaborative Project, for the period from July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009. FISCAL.IMPACT: Approval of this grant award will result in funding in an amount not to exceed $41,892 from Center for Human Development through the San Francisco Foundation, for the East County Environmental Justice Action Collaborative Project. No County funds required. BACKGROUND/REASON(S) FOR RECOMMENDATION(S): Located along Contra Costa County's industrial corridor and dissected by Highway 4, the low income, ethnically diverse Bay Point/Pittsburg community is exposed to a variety of toxic pollutants that potentially impact residents' health. The East County Environmental Justice Action Collaborative Project builds on current efforts to establish an Environmental Justice Collaborative that will work to increase the ability of residents, Community Based Organizations and businesses to identify local environmental hazards and develop solutions to protect the community's health. The goal of the project is to continue establishing an effective collaborative, including resident leaders, that will educate the broader community about local environmental hazards and develop and implement action plans to address community-identified toxic hazards, through June 30, 2009. Three sealed/certified copies of this Board Order should be returned to the Contracts and Grants Unit.
