Approve and authorize the Health Services Director or his designee (Wendel Brunner, M.D.), to accept on
behalf of the County, Grant Award #28-774-1 from Kaiser Permanente Community Benefits Program, in an
amount not to exceed $30,000, for the Community Wellness and Prevention Program (CW&PP) to continue
the Concord Monument New Kids Project, for the period from July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Acceptance of this Grant Award will result in an amount of$30,000 from the Kaiser Permanente Community
Benefits Program in support of the Concord Monument New Kids Project. No County funds are required.
BACKGROUNDIREASON(S) FOR RECOMMENDATION(S):
Nearly 40% of Contra Costa Regional Medical Center (CCRMC) pediatric patients are overweight or at risk
for becoming overweight. Among ethnic groups, Latino youth are most likely to be overweight. The
monument corridor is a predominantly Latino neighborhood with a high need for an intervention for its
overweight, school aged children and their families. Monument New Kids is the only program of its kind in
Central Contra Costa County. The program is collaboration between Community Wellness and Prevention
Program (CW&PP), Public Health Clinic Services and Ambulatory Care. Funding for this project will
continue to mirror the success of our East County New Kids Project and decrease the rates of overweight
among children ages 6 — 14 in the monument neighborhood of concord by providing culturally competent,
linguistically appropriate and accessible prevention and intervention programs,through June 30,2009.
Three sealed and certified copies of the Board should be returned to the Contracts and Grants Unit.
