HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 09162008 - C.25 IN THE MATTER OF CELEBRATING RESOLUTION NO. 2008/613 THE OPENING OF ML CASA TOO AND HONORING LUTHERAN SOCIAL SERVICES OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA FOR THEIR SERVICE TO CONTRA COSTA COUNTY WHEREAS, Contra Costa County has an undeniable homeless problem, with more than 700 youth between the ages of 18 and 24 reported homeless nightly, sleeping on friend's couches, beside roadways, in alleyways,in abandoned buildings and in the county's parks and fields; and WHEREAS, former foster children comprise approximately 60% of the 420 homeless people in Contra Costa County on any given night and throughout the nation; and WHEREAS, additional services are needed;to provide for former foster youth who are homeless because they are no longer eligible for services; and WHEREAS, Lutheran Social Services of Northern California has been serving the poor and reducing suffering throughout Northern California since 1884; and WHEREAS, LutheranSocial Services of-Northern California's current mission is to reduces homelessness among former foster youth in Northern California by providing shelter and a set of structured programs to help displaced youth become successful and self-sufficient, most recently evidenced through the establishment of the Mi Casa program; and WHEREAS, Mi Casa is already an integral part of the Concord and Contra. Costa community, helping foster youth become self-sufficient and successful young adults; and WHEREAS, Lutheran Social Services of Northern California is successfully expanding the Mi Casa program by 80%with the opening of Mi Casa Too on September 24, 2008; NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Burd of Supervisors of Contra Costa County congratulates Lutheran Social Services of Northern California on this landmark expansion of the Mi Casa program and commends them for their significant and continuing contributions to improving the quality of life in Contra Costa County through their dedicated mission to help homeless former foster children turn their lives, around and become productive, self-sufficient citizens who will contribute positively to their conimututies and society at large throughout their lifetimes. 71 FEDERAL D.
