IN THE MATTER OF RECOGNIZING RESOLUTION NO. 2008/548
THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF KEN HEAD ON HIS
RETIREMENT FROM CONTRA COSTA COUNTY
WHEREAS, Ken Head began his career with Contra Costa County in 1973 working for the Health
Department, then transferred to the Public Works Department as a laborer in 1979. He was
promoted from laborer to E01 to Specialty Crew Leader, a position he has held since 1991; and
WHEREAS, Ken received the J. Michael Walford Team Achievement Award in 2005 for his work with
the Sign and Striping Crew in recognition of the efficiency with which they did their work for the
County, the City of Oakley, the Flood Control District and other agencies; and
WHEREAS, Ken was awarded the Public Works Department Award of Excellence in December 1995,
February 2002, November 2003, and March 2004 for various projects done by the Sign and
Striping Crew, including the coordination work with the County of Alameda on the Vasco Road
"Daylight Headlight" section ensuring that the entire corridor was posted simultaneously; and
WHEREAS, despite having to work shorthanded, Ken was nominated along withtheSign and Striping
Crew for the J. Michael Walford Project Manager of the Year Award for completing major projects
including the street name signs for Discovery Bay and a nighttime reflectivity sign survey; and
WHEREAS, Ken has been instrumental to the Traffic Operations Section for his knowledge of sign and
striping installations and his problem solving techniques in verifying that the signage and striping
requested by Traffic can be implemented in the field; and
WHEREAS, Ken has kept up to date in his field by taking numerous training courses over the years and
learning the new Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) sign codes; and
WHEREAS, Ken has been recognized for his contributions to various training and orientation programs
in the Public Works Department, such as the Laborers' Orientation; and
WHEREAS, Ken's knowledge of the County, especially its Sign and Striping operation,is unsurpassed; he
has worked in almost every aspect of the Maintenance Division's operations and has been
recognized for his special efforts in customer service helping the citizens of this County; and
WHEREAS, Ken's dedication to County service is evident as he has trained many individuals who were
then promoted to Maintenance Worker 4s and Supervisors. He has always been an advocate for
professionalism in Maintenance and exhibited an ability to handle a variety of customer-related
issues; and
WHEREAS, Ken has been a valued member of the Public Works Department team, working quietly and
effectively to get the job done, and has been well respected by his fellow peers;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors does
hereby recognize and honor Ken Head for his 35 years of service to the County on the occasion of
his retirement, and gives full appreciation for his dedicated service to the Public Works Department
and the people of this C-may.
