FISCAL IMPACT: No fiscal impact. BACKGROUND/REASON(S) FOR RECOMMENDATION(S): On February 27, 2007 the Board of Supervisors approved a personnel action to revise and retitle the class of Dietetic Technician: Due to an error, the board order and agenda language reflected a new title of Dietetic Assistant for the class. The Position Adjustment Request (form P-300) correctly identified the new title of the classification as Nutrition Assistant. The action requested in this board order will correct the discrepancy between the documents previously approved and reflect the correct title of Nutrition Assistant. Copies of the previous action are attached. Class specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. DEFINITION: ' Under general supervision, participates and assists in patient nutritional care services in an acute care hospital; relieves Registered Dietitians of certain routine aspects of the nutritional services program and performs dietary related tasks on a delegated basis; does other related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Positions in this class work out of the Diet.Office of the Nutritional Services Department at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center where they assist Registered Dietitians in providing nutritional care to patients. This class is distinguished from Dietitian in that the latter carries primary responsibility for insuring optimal nutritional support to patients including those at nutritional risk. It is distinguished from Institutional Services Worker in that positions in the latter class perform routine food production and sanitation tasks in the Food Services Department and do not typically assist Dietitians with the nutritional aspects of the program. Work direction is provided by a Dietitian and administrative supervision is provided by the Assistant Director of Nutritional Services. TYPICAL TASKS: • Reviews hospital admissions lists and screen patients for nutritional risk using predetermined protocols • In consultation with a Dietitian assists in developing a nutritional care plan for patients not at risk • Through observation at meal time, checking the medical chart and talking with patients, monitors the nutrition care plan • Provides patient educational information and counseling to persons not at risk regarding nutritional concepts and desired changes in eating habits • Examines medical records to verify physician's diet orders • Based on physician's orders, records prescribed meal patterns including routine modified diets and allowable substitutes on individual patient menus • Records patient observations made and nutritional education given in medical chart • Collects data from patient medical records and enters in Diet Office records • Performs simple mathematical calculations such as percentage of food eaten, caloric intake and protein content Dietetic Technician Page 2 • Maintains_ nourishment care file (rand) and coordinates dietetic orders with food production staff • Calculates food production tallys and patient diets needed by category • Updates patient profile cards in Diet Office and documents care plans in Dietitian's cardex for patients being followed closely • . Monitors trayline assembly for accuracy and appropriateness to insure what is there conforms to the approved menu plan for each patient May fill in on trayline station • Relieves cashier or others on work breaks as needed • Communicates with Dietitians and food production staff regarding ongoing patient nutritional needs and production requirements A MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Possession of either 1) an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college or university which included completion of a program of study in food and nutrition approved by the American Dietetic Association or:2) a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university , with a major! in foods, nutrition, home economics, dietetics or a closely related field.
